Amazon.co.uk Review Remarkably, the Johnny Mortimer-scripted series Never the Twain ran to over 50 episodes between 1981 and 1984 on ITV. It starred Donald Sinden as Simon Peel, a stuffy, upper-middle class antiques dealer who lives next door to Oliver Smallbridge (Windsor Davies of It Ain't Half Hot, Mum fame), a working-class lad made good, also in the antiques trade. As the first series establishes, theirs is a prickly relationship, not just because they're rivals in trade but also rivals for the affections of the middle-aged, comely Veronica. They are aghast when they discover their respective son and daughter plan to marry, coming on like the Capulets and Montagues of Middle England. Never the Twain is a pleasantly predictable antique of the sitcom variety, redeemed by Sinden and Davies' gruff, blustery and persistent antagonism. It depicts a cosy, never-never world of "dirty weekends", huge suburban houses, borderline homophobic mirth and reliable puns on "genes" and "jeans"--the sort of series in which characters greet surprising news by spraying a mouthful of tea halfway across the room. Some will find it barely endurable, others a welcome reminder of a bygone televisual era before alternative comedy became the ubiquitous norm. This DVD contains an episode guide and picture gallery. --David Stubbs

| Customer Reviews: A classic and very funny series September 8, 2007 David 5 out of 5 found this review helpful
What a great series Never The Twain was. I used to watch it when I was younger and still try to catch it on ITV 3. Windsor Davis and Donald Sinden play two rival antique dealers whose daughter and son are planning to get married. The first series is about them trying to convince their fathers to bury the hatchet and give them their blessing and is very funny. It's intersting to note that as the series progressed the two antique dealers mellowed towards each other. Alot of old series made in the 80's have dated and I am please to say Never The Twain isn't one of them. 11 series were made in total but to date only series 1 has been released on dvd which is a real shame. What we need is a company who specialise in classic television (Network perhaps) to release the entire series so we can enjoy all 11 series. Fingers crossed.
Good family entertainment - light hearted comedy November 17, 2001 26 out of 32 found this review helpful
This comedy was a classic in its' time and it was wonderful to step back again in time and re-live the funny experiences of the two battling antique dealers, Oliver Smallbridge and Simon Peel, played by Windsor Davies and Donald Sunden. The dry senses of humour displayed by both actors has not dated, even though this comedy was made back in the early 80's. The humour is still very funny indeed. I was initially dubious when I first purchased this DVD as I thought it may be rather dated, but how wrong I was. The humour with its'constant double-meanings had my family and myself on the edge of our seats doubled up with laughter. Thames Television made 11 series in all over a period of 10 years and I seriously hope that they hurry up and produce the other 10 on DVD, so I can again, re-live the Smallbridge and Peel saga. Absolutely excellent viewing - not to be missed!!
