Amazon.co.uk Review The roar of a motorcycle can signal freedom--or trouble. Sons of Anarchy examines a biker gang from both perspectives, as Jackson "Jax" Teller (Charlie Hunnam, Nicholas Nickleby) struggles between loyalty to the Sons of Anarchy Motorcycle Club, Redwood Originals (aka SAMCRO or "Sam Crow," which his dead father founded) and doubts about the criminal and often brutal actions the club demands of him. The series opens with a rival gang stealing the Sons' stash of guns and the premature birth of Jax's son, two events that sow questions in Jax's mind about the life he's leading. Over the course of the season, these questions will spark dangerous conflict with the gang's leader, Clay Morrow (Ron Perlman, Hellboy) and with his own mother, Gemma (Katey Sagal, Married with Children), who's now married to Clay. Despite the macho setting, Gemma is the standout character of the first season of Sons of Anarchy: fierce and manipulative, she sets the good of the club (and her own desires) above everything else--even her love for her son. Despite the lingering presence of his junkie ex-wife (Drea de Matteo, The Sopranos), Jax finds himself drawn to his high school sweetheart, Tara Knowles (Maggie Siff, Mad Men), now a doctor, and who saved his son's life.Throughout the first season of Sons of Anarchy, SAMCRO grapples with a multicultural array of foes: Hispanic bikers, African-American gangbangers, white supremacists, an Asian triad, and agents of the ATF. Uneasy alliances and precarious compromises rarely work out as planned, leading to nail-biting confrontations and headaches for Jax. But the rituals and emotional bonds of the club itself are the real subject of the show--how an institution built on friendship and family loyalty gets twisted by ambition and greed. One particularly compelling story line follows Jax and his best friend, Opie (Ryan Hurst, Remember the Titans), who had stepped away from the gang to make peace with his wife; to help Jax, he re-enters the biker life, with horrific consequences. The creator of Sons of Anarchy, Kurt Sutter, was a writer and actor on The Shield, and fans of that show will find a similarly compelling mixture of scheming machinations and compromised morality here, grounded in excellent performances and vivid production.--Bret Fetzer, Amazon.com

Best series ever made July 21, 2010 Harley Christine Sons of Anarchy has 2 be the best tv show ever made. Here u have it all, love, war, drama. I cant wate for seson 3
An enjoyable watch July 20, 2010 xColdBloodx (UK) What lets the show down is that the storylines aren't well balanced with the dialogue, I mean, there's killing and plenty of it but no cursing beyond the S word?! I know it seems like a daft criticism but given much of the subject matter you would expect the characters to be swearing. To be honest it's a small criticism because the show is enjoyable but it has lost a lot of the grittiness and realism I'd expect in a show about a gun-running biker gang, and if like me you tend to buy a box set and watch a few episodes in a single session you'll see just how frothy and cheesy some episodes are compared the first couple of episodes. That really is the only bad thing I have to say about the show and like I said it's a minor criticism since I can understand the makers decision to dumb down the dialogue to make it more TV friendly.
All in all, it's an enjoyable, easy to watch show and for the prices that it's now available for it's worth picking up.
Iron Horse His Wife, Iron Horse His Life...... July 5, 2010 Adam Jackson (Stoke On Trent , England) 0 out of 2 found this review helpful
Can't praise this enough - stunning scripts, brilliant characters & acting and a healthy balance of drama and action. If there is a better TV series around than this, then I'm surprised! Series 1 is brilliant and Series 2 is maybe even better. I'm notoriously suspicious of TV shows ( like that Lost rubbish) but this has me hooked. Anyone unsure should have a look at Wikipedia for a LOT of info on the show. What I like is that while never gratuitous or exploitative, the violence is as hardcore as your average cinema thriller. I never realised that American TV was now this brutal. There's still an embargo on really explicit sex & bad language but it's the action that counts. It's not all 100mph Road Warrior style mayhem at all and it's the quieter, more character driven scenes that are often the highlights. Ron Perlman continues to improve his resume and Charlie Hunnam, so maligned in Green Street, is a revelation here. The supporting cast are so strong here and it's a testament to the writing that such a band of killers & outlaw bikers can often be so likeable. It's a key strength of the show that the lines are so blurred between good and evil - and that includes Charming's often morally ambiguous police force. The photography is great, the action scenes well choreographed & edited and there's a great mix of Rock music, mostly of the Alternative & Southern variety!! The biker look & life is well depicted and looks to have been well researched. Let's be honest, it's a subculture that so many of us secretly dream of being in!
....There's lot's of hot biker chicks as well - SO WHAT ARE YOU WAITING FOR??!!!
Wild Hogs without the jokes July 1, 2010 Marwood (Scotland) 2 out of 2 found this review helpful
Good cast but disappointing. Ron Perlman is always good to watch. Maggie Siff & Katey Sagal are great. There are echoes of Lady MacBeth in Jax's mother and echoes of Hamlet in the relationship between Jax and his mother/stepfather. Unfortunately each episode is elaborately constructed to justify the violence, murder & extortion perpetrated by the Sons of Anarchy. They sell guns but not drugs, but then they're selling those guns to drug dealers. They only murder people that deserve it. Very American and ultimately simple-minded. In The Sopranos it was clear that the characters were weak and reprehensible, SOA is much more superficial and we're ultimately encouraged to empathise with these simple-minded murderous thugs apparently standing up for personal freedom and the American way. Just what we need, more programmes mythologising criminals.
Brilliant Series... something for fans of The Wire/ Sopranos June 30, 2010 andyl_14 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
I bought this box set based of seeing an advert on the London Underground.
I'm a massive fan of The Soprano's and The Wire so was looking for another Box set to get into. It turned up and showed it to my girlfriend who was up for watching it.
We were hooked after the 1st episode, and watched the whole box set in less than 2 weeks.
Whilst I dont think it is as good as The Wire or The Soprano's it is certainly a brilliant series, the characters are brilliant and you certainly like the Bikers, much in the same way you like the Soprano's they may be so far beyond the law, they mean well (most of the time). Son's of Archachy is one of my best finds, and something I'm keen to spread the word amongst friends.
Great acting, not violent for violents sake, and all episodes were strong. Looking forward to Season 2 coming out on DVD soon!
