Amazon.co.uk Review
Alan Ball’s True Blood series works well for television, as it has enough sensationalism to tantalise and enough story girth to make the viewer care about the characters. That one can finally invest emotion into monsters, including an undead Civil War victim, a transformer who can shapeshift into various animals, and a female mind reader, speaks volumes about America’s willingness to accept fantasy. Of course, television has always produced good fantasy shows (I Dream of Jeannie), but True Blood’s Southern Goth brand of fun horror is more macabre and more perverse, not to mention gorier, than most shows of its kind to date. Adapted from Charlaine Harris’ Sookie Stackhouse novels, True Blood thrills because of its equal blend in each episode of erotica, humour, tragedy, mystery, and fantasy.

Set in a rural, swampy Louisiana parish, the show centers around Sookie Stackhouse (Anna Paquin) and her clan, sweet grandmother Adele (Lois Smith) and air-headed brother Jason (Ryan Kwanten). Illicit love is spawned early on, when Sookie saves vampire Bill Compton (Stephen Moyer) from having his blood stolen in the parking lot of Merlotte’s diner, owned by Sam Merlotte (Sam Trammell) who completes what will form a complex love triangle. As tensions between Sookie’s suitors loosen or tighten, many side plots, such as her African American best friend Tara’s (Rutina Wesley) struggle with an alcoholic, Bible-thumping mother and her brother’s dangerous crush on drug-addicted hippie Amy Burley (Lizzy Caplan), keep one wondering who will succeed in this podunk place. The main tension throughout, however, is a race war waged between vampires and humans. As murders of “fang bangers” occur (human girls who let vampires bite them) and dumb policeman Andy Bellefleur (Chris Bauer) fails to find clues, one sees the metaphorical implications of vampirism and feels deeper resonance with what can be a downright trashy show. Gossip galore, especially about what kinds of babies interbreeding will produce, is rampant. One of the funniest characters is Tara’s flamboyant cousin, Lafayette (Nelsan Ellis), who deals drugs, works as a fry cook, and services the local white politicians, while making sure he’s always up in everyone’s business.

What makes True Blood smarter than pure soap opera is the parallels it draws between its monster mash and actual, familiar social problems. Sookie and her friends watch the news where Evangelicals bash vampires and prohibit mixed marriage and everyone is addicted to V, a.k.a vampire blood, that effects like psychedelic heroin. Even its gore reflects a mix of serious and silly, as vampires explode into red, sticky goop. Though it may not be attempting to qualify for the best vampire footage ever shot, True Blood is as addictive as that substance the town’s youth obsesses over, which is a metaphor in itself. --Trinie Dalton

4 out of 5 stars ... I've been turned.   September 3, 2010

Let me start by telling you that I wasn't a fan of this show from the get-go. However, this is no longer the case! I know a lot of reviews here have noticed similar themes shared with the movie 'Twilight'. I've watched twilight - TrueBlood is a much more worth-while watch.

This is a balanced review, despite eventually really getting into the show... It does have some flaws (in my eyes, at least).

I'll explain my reasons for not being sure if I would get into the show after the first few episodes:

1. The setting; Hick Town, U.S.A. I was getting pretty sick of seeing moss-ridden swamp houses and filthy settings.

2. The accents; hill-billy. I was struggling to put up with it.

3. The air-headed protagonist (though the main character's IQ does seem to improve as each episode goes by).

4. Occasional over-acting and cheesy line (There aren't many, though - don't worry!

5. The sex (don't get me wrong, I enjoyed it!) However, there is such a thing as too much. I feel the show has relied a bit too heavily on the sex as a content filler and gimmick to keep the lads watching - though there are plenty of other reasons for doing so. The sex scenes are brilliantly acted and many fit the story nicely, occasionally you do wonder if they added a few too many scenes. As a male viewer I will be forced to scald my genitalia for this comment! - I know, I'm a disgrace to my gender!

6. The show has plenty of dialogue, which is good... Still, I was hoping to see more violent scenes and a bit more violence in the show. There are sporadic scenes of gore, but not so much fighting. Maybe half the filming time devoted to the sex scenes could've gone into some fisty-cuffs!

Now for what you guys really want to read! The good stuff:

1. The acting; it is very, very good. Although, I did mentioned the rare moment of over-acting, that aside... The character 'Bill Compton' is a truly enticing one. By the time he's given his speech / presentation at the town's church, you will have become emotionally attached to him.

2. The story; rarely does it 'lull'. You're kept interested throughout the season. Some very good writing went into this show. There are plenty of plot twists and turns; throughout the show I was only able to guess one!

3. Character development; although slow(er) at some points, is really well implemented. You do grow fond of the characters.

4. The gore and special effects on the whole are very decent.

5. The humour; there is a moderate amount... I certainly chuckled a few times during the season - which is never a bad thing :)

6. The show does put 'sparkly vampires' to shame, certainly a more grown-up portrayal of our fanged mythological friends.

7. I enjoyed the mythology implemented by the show, you'll find yourself craving knowledge about the vampires' traits and origins.

8. Has helped me overcome my deep annoyance of hill-billies! (a bit).

9. I have been turned... By TrueBlood.

This one gets a 4/5 for me. Make sure you watch the whole season before judging!

This is no Twilight!!!!

All the things you think about in Twilight happen in this gritty adult show. I don't want to come accross a vampire anymore!!!

I recommend this highly as it is funny and completly different.

I ordered the DVD from the marketplace. It came in a plastic case without the paper box that I see at the shops. I am not very sure if it is an original. Its a little frustrating if I was sold a bootleg copy even if I didnt pay too much.

5 out of 5 stars Unsure at first. But i've been bitten...   July 23, 2010

Sorry for the terrible vamp pun there, but it was necessary. This series is a big mash up of all the vampire legends and recent revamps (sorry) of them. It is, in totally honesty, one big cliche.

However, after two episodes I was hooked. There are some potentially drool-worthy hotties and a few of the characters are down right hilarious! Lafayette for example is THE funniest character in the whole series.

The script has been written with such wit and sharpness and that is refreshing. Yes, this series is an 18 for a reason. I grumbled when I bought it that I had to show my ID, but after watching the first episode I felt like apologising for being so rude to the cashier. It is an 18 for a very good reason. Blood, sex, blood, more sex, gore, violence, blood and more sex!

There are some cringeworthy moments where you think 'you SO did not just use that cliche' but these are far outweighed by the awesomeness that sweeps over the whole series.

On another level, there are some interesting parallels in this series. As in, the segregation and prejudice against the vamps, the use of drugs; the vamp blood and the fear of the unknown.

Love it. Buy it. Be sucked in (my bad...).

5 out of 5 stars Another superb drama from HBO.   July 19, 2010

True Blood is a yet another superb drama from HBO. Based on the Sookie Stackhouse novels by Charlaine Harris, True Blood is similar to other HBO shows such as 'Carnivale', 'The Sopranos' and 'Deadwood' in that it's not so much the overall vampire theme of the show but the engrossing characters which hook you into the series.
Be warned though, True Blood is fully deserving of its 18 certificate, it's gory, sexually explicit, full of bad language, and utterly unmissable!
