Truly Transcendant July 26, 2010 daisy delight 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
This account of the life of Ralph Vaughan Williams is presented with such depth that the viewer becomes part of the narrative in an odd way. At the end of it, I felt that I had been THERE, and I had been eavesdropping on the life of a composer whose music I have loved for years. Tony Palmer does more than contradict the 'cuddly teddy-bear' image of the folk-song collector, he brings to life a person through that person's music, and you feel that someone has put into words what you have known for a long time - that the composer was a very close friend, and through this DVD we are priviledged to share real intimacy with the life of that composer.
I loved this, and it stayed with me for a day or two after I watched it. I shall never listen to RVW's music in quite the same way again.
One of the few great British composers April 21, 2010 Christopher Coates (Perth, Australia) A very worthy tribute by Tony Palmer. I didn't know much about Vaughan Williams, but have enjoyed his best known works for decades. Some great interview footage of his friends, family and fellow composers.
The only downside was the repeated use of violent images (one in particular was of a dead child in the middle east in some recent conflict) which was used twice.
If Palmer intended to shock, then images of the Great War, (in which RVW served)would have been more appropriate.
I would recommend this DVD to those who are fond the music and career of Raiph Vaughan Williams.

This DVD gives a lovely account of VWs life and times. I have to say it doesnt speak the truth about VWs later relationship with his second wife which comes in a subsequent DVD but generally it does give a wonderful insight into the composers lifestyle.
Documentary on Ralph Vaughan Williams April 17, 2009 Gillian Pauli (Brisbane, Australia) 2 out of 2 found this review helpful
We heard Tony Palmer (maker of this film) interviewed on ABC Radio National and found his comments so interesting that we sought out and bought the DVD. Palmer's purpose is to give an insight into Vaughan Williams the man; in addition to the fascinating biography (which includes interviews with family and well known musicians) there are magnificient performances of some of Vaughan Williams's wonderful music.
O Thou Transcendent (RVW) March 29, 2009 A. J. Edwards (Berkshire, United Kingdom) 2 out of 3 found this review helpful
What a delightful DVD !!! Beautifully encapsulates this great man's life. A film to last a lifetime which will watched over and over again. An absolute 'must' for anyone even remotely interested in RVW's life and what inspired and influenced his music. Just buy it !!
