| Customer Reviews: Come on chaps, 5 stars! This is not a masterpiece. July 24, 2010 Philip G. Brown (Clevedon, England) To illustrate the points below, I have used some plot description which some might regard as spoilers.
Jack Holborn is a 1982 TV mini-series, based on a navel yarn by Leon Garfield, concerning the adventures of a thirteen year old orphan boy, in the late eighteenth century, on a quest to discover the identity of his mother.
It is a co-production of companies in Germany, New Zealand and the U.K.
Five stars for Patrick Bach who plays the title role. He inhabits the character and is very personable and totally believable. Four stars for the shipboard scenes, you can almost smell the salt and the dirt. Three stars for the decent amount of money spent on the project and the exotic locations. Two stars for the photography, it's basic and ramshackle, but it does give the series an authentic look.
And now the problems, the `one stars'.
The direction is slack.
A multi-lingual production is not going to be easy for actors, but a good director should be able to guide them through. Here, the characters are not developed into rounded individuals, but change randomly from sequence to sequence. The lead adult plays twin brothers, a judge and a sea captain, but when the roles are swapped, and the judge becomes the captain and the captain becomes the judge, so are their personalities.
I can almost imagine how Patrick Bach's close-ups were done. "Eyes, kid, give us more eyes." "Show surprise, kid . . . . No, no, no, give us more surprise!" "Look sad, kid, while we dollop this glycerine into your eyes." These little sequences are then clumsily edited into scenes, thereby detracting from Patrick's overall performance.
The sword fighting scenes are risible. There are two camp acrobats and actors who've never been shown how to swash their buckles.
There are two female actors in the series (if you discount the old crone who buys Jack at the beginning) and they are, to say the least, curious. Would it be too impolite to suggest they were, possibly, friends of the producer?
It may be clear from the above that there is never any mystery as to who Jack's mother is, how can there be?
The dubbing into English is no worse than on many foreign language TV productions, which means it's terrible.
The DVD version consists of six episodes (three per disc) of approximately 45 minutes each. Picture quality is adequate. Although it looks as if it was originally shot on 35mm film, the transfer seems more in line with 16mm.
Buy it for Patrick Bach's performance and the tang of the sea.
Footnote: I read on IMDb that Patrick Bach played the voice of Samwise in the German version of Peter Jackson's Lord of the Rings trilogy. Clearly someone in New Zealand remembered him.
Engrossing Adventure January 4, 2010 Alex McGregor (Northwest , USA) 2 out of 2 found this review helpful
This classic sea adventure was enjoyed by the entire family. The teen age boys were delighted with each episode. Patrick Bach as Jack Holborn did a fantastic job as did all the supporting actors.
Jack Holborn review October 14, 2009 Peter C. Chiverton 2 out of 3 found this review helpful
I remember watching the whole series of this as a kid, its an excellent film, I would class it as a sea adventure, Simular to pirates of the carribean. I love this film. I would reccommend it anyday. Suitable for the whole family, although not sure under 5's would understand most of it.
Patrick Bach is the perfect stowaway in'Jack Holborn' August 10, 2008 Springy (UK) 19 out of 20 found this review helpful
Another Children's TV series that out performs many produced by full blown film studios.
A swashbuckling tale of pirates and the usual hidden treasure set mainly on the high seas. Jack Holborn is the young orphan stowaway aboard the 'Charming Molly'. Naturally being a pirate film there is much treachery afoot and after many twists and turns it's only in the last of the 6 episodes that the truth come out.
The film is brilliant, very well made, excellent cast and as I said, the equal of many main stream movies. Patrick Back plays his part to perfection and it helps that he looks it too.
A cracking good film that you and your kids will watch more than once!
