Amazon.co.uk Review
One of the best comedy series ever to emerge from England, Black Adder traces the deeply cynical and self-serving lineage of various Edmund Blackadders from the muck of the Middle Ages to the frontline of World War I. In his pre-Mr Bean triumph, British comic actor Rowan Atkinson played all five versions of Edmund, beginning with the villainous and cowardly Duke of Edinburgh, whose scheming mind and awful haircut seem to stand him in good stead to become the next Archbishop of Canterbury -- a deadly occupation if ever there was one. Among tales of royal dethronings, Black Death, witch-smellers (who root out spell-makers with their noses), and ghosts, Edmund is a perennial survivor who never quite gets ahead in multiple episodes. Jump to the Elizabethan era and Atkinson picks up the saga as Lord Edmund, who is perpetually courting favour from mad Queen Bess (Miranda Richardson) and is always walking a tightrope from which he can either gain the world or lose his head. Subjected to bizarre services for her majesty (at one point, Edmund is asked to do for potatoes what Sir Walter Raleigh did for tobacco), Edmund -- like his ancestor -- can never quite fulfill his larger ambitions. The next incarnation we encounter is in late-18th-century Regency England. This time, Blackadder is a mere butler to the idiotic Prince Regent (Hugh Laurie in a brilliantly buffoonish performance) and is caught in various misadventures with Samuel Johnson, Shakespearean actors, the Scarlet Pimpernel, and William Pitt the younger. With a brief stop in Victorian London for a Christmas special, the series concludes with several episodes set during the Great War. The new Edmund is a career army officer, but a scoundrel all the same. Shirking his duties whenever possible and taking advantage of any opportunity for undeserved reward, this final, deeply sour, and very funny Blackadder negotiates survival among a cadre of fools and dimwits. No small mention can be made of Atkinson's supporting cast, easily among the finest comic performers of their generation: besides Laurie and Richardson, Stephen Fry, Tony Robinson, and Tim McInnerny. --Tom Keogh

5 out of 5 stars Rowan Atkinson at the best   July 26, 2010
xanax025 (Udine, Italy)
This is, in my opinion, the best DVD set ever. I always loved "Blackadder". Even if I am italian I always found the british satire awesome. I was used to watch "Black Adder" on TV, on BBC channel, when I was a child and that was a very nice surprise to find a DVD set including all the episodes here. The Black Adder character is, by all means, my favorite one. In my opinion much better than "Mr. Bean". For those who loves Rowan Atkinson satire this DVD set is a MUST!!!

5 out of 5 stars If you want a laught this is all you need   July 16, 2010
Ben Nicholson (Landrake, Saltash, Cornwall, UK)
A brilliant comedy (some people might want to skip the 1st series but others will enjoy, but for the other 3 it's still worth it). A brilliant price and a must have. This is one of the best comedy's around and if you want a good laugh then is all you need. A must buy.

5 out of 5 stars Better get your sword and buckler to resist that caustic comedy   July 9, 2010
Jacques COULARDEAU (OLLIERGUES France)
The first and essential element is the set of actors and first of all Rowan Atkinson. That is pure English comedy based on totally anachronistic and crazy situations, on witty puns that nearly or most of the time have to do with what is generally under the belt of most people but that is floating on top of the mind of these comedians. It is supposed to make you laugh and nothing else and it ridicules all historical characters and situations: Elizabeth I, Queen Victoria, Georges VI or some other Prince of Wales, the First World War, Robin Hood and I guess they avoided Peter Pan because he might only be marginally historical, though Pitt Junior is a real hit, definitely under the belt at the level of the comforter, if you see what I mean. It even turns upside down the famous Christmas Carol. As for the Time Machine it is completely twisted around in all directions, back and forth for sure, to make a sort of self-centered social climbing, politically opportunistic remake of Back to the Future more than the Time Machine, but the principle is the same. So Sir Edmund Blackadder finishing King Edmund I is at least hilarious. H.G. Wells is betrayed since for him you cannot change the past and Zemeckis is betrayed just the same since you are not supposed to use your time travelling to recuperate some personal advantage from it. I must say though this type of comedy is light maybe slightly too light, but it is good indeed.

5 out of 5 stars Fantastic series   June 7, 2010

We love Blackadder, I ordered this for my other half as it has all Blackadder series and specials. Very pleased with this box set.

4 out of 5 stars Great comedy, not so great quality   May 24, 2010
Mr. Daniel A. Thomas (Sussex, UK)
Anyone looking at Blackadder nows it's pretty timeless quality comedy! This was a very good price and replaces a load of VHS videos I had, plus the specials on top, so I think that's great. The quality obv. beats VHS but isn't as good as the digitally remastered version of these series - but is half the price. The choice is yours! Content def worth the 4 stars, only let down, albeit not massively, but the quality. Enjoy!!
