Very disappointing indeed September 7, 2010 Mr Chairman (Buckinghamshire) 0 out of 1 found this review helpful
After watching the excellent series, 'Spartacus' on Bravo with the superb performances by John Hannah et al, I was immediately attracted to this film after reading a few of the five star reviews on here.
To be blunt and brutally honest, I thought it was rather tedious and at times looked low budget - a British 'Gladiator' is certainly isn't and by far the best bits of the film are shown in the short and highly edited adverts they made to promote it, as in reality it soon goes downhill fast when watching the real thing.
For me the film was a great disappointment and certainly didn't come anywhere near the grade of all these five star ratings it's been given on here.
On the plus side it has been beautifully shot in parts and there is some quite good camerawork as the 'Team' make their escape, but this is not enough to make it a good film or even hold your interest and it soon became rather boring and predictable. Dominic West is a fine actor, but in his brief appearances in the film I thought he was rather wooden and his role could have been played by anyone with half his acting skills. The same goes for the rest of the cast.
Much has been said about this film already, most of it rubbish and in my opinion it's been way over-hyped, I'll give it six months before it's found in the bargain basement sections because that's where it belongs, so save you money if you want to see it as it won't be long before it's available for under a fiver.
If you want violence and the brutality of Rome with a far better story line and a few sexy bits thrown in to boot, then try watching the recent series called 'Spatacus' which was shown on Bravo, because it's leaps and bounds above Centurion both in quality and action.
An excellent film ................ September 5, 2010 Impgreene 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
I was surprised by this film, the acting is good, the script is well written - the story is a bit farfetched, but not too much (and what film script isn't).
The downside for some is that the film is very, very gory (but then you can guess that from the DVD sleeve) - so unless you can sit through people having their heads chopped in half and hacked off on camera, then leave the film well alone.
Gorgeous September 3, 2010 Ardito Giacomo (Macerata) 2 out of 2 found this review helpful
CENTURION is, in my opinion, a little shining masterpiece.
Of course it's too modern in sensibility, but CINEMA is an art form in its own, and it is not supposed to follow History's paths.
Moreover I think it's worthy finding, how many directors can create modern versions of ancient stories, sagas or legends.

Overall, the UK Film Council has given birth to a production of which the BBC Drama Department would be proud. This film promises much but was obviously crushed out of shape by the demands of the politically correct morons holding the purse strings. All of the right-on factors are here, from the numerical diversity of the Romans (one Irish, one black, one Asian, one older etc.) to the skinny little female able to beat up a fourteen-stone man in a fist fight. Boring, daft, gratuitously violent and utterly predictable from the word go. Best give it a miss.
